As the school year continues most teachers in classes are enforcing the new phone rule. Students have been good about staying off their phones in class, but some classes more than others. What makes this rule hard to follow is that the same teacher who is taking our phones away and telling us to stay off of them is sometimes the same teacher that is on theirs in the middle of class.
It is discouraging for students to see teachers sitting at their desk texting someone or even leaving the middle of class to go take a phone call. This issue is a distraction, one that’s been happening for many years. Students aren’t allowed to text or make phone calls in the middle of class, and if we want to we can “use the school phone,” but shouldn’t that be the same for teachers?
Teachers have things going on in their personal lives, which is understandable to a certain extent. We, as students and teachers, all have stuff going on in our personal lives and this is where it isn’t fair to us when the teachers are not doing what they are preaching to us.
I feel like often most teachers fall short at the thought that maybe their student might have something going on personally. For instance if a family member was in the hospital, etc., that student might want their phone on them to know what is going on, but a teacher is quick to just react rather than to think there could possibly be an acceptable reason. But if they were in our shoes they would be able to keep their phone on them and check for updates without any issues.
I strongly believe that one person who is preaching something has to be one of the people also standing on what they are saying. Of course we are kids and teachers are adults, but there could definitely be a change with teachers and their own cell phone policy as it is very disturbing to the class. In conclusion, maybe the cell phone rule will go even better the more teachers stay off of them, too.
