It was a cold Thursday evening with the wind blowing north, and it so happens to be the night of Halloween. Exactly one year ago there was a kid around my age (15) who went missing. The parents claimed that their kid went out on a walk when they weren’t home, which I never truly believed. My town loves Halloween. Each year they let the students out of school early but after the incident they made them go to a full day of school. They also implemented a rule of not going out by yourself after 6:00 p.m.
After school my three friends and I went home, but I grew bored at home. At around 8:45 p.m. I texted my friends and asked if they wanted to go for a quick walk. Two of my friends said they had homework, but one of my friends said they would go for a quick walk. So we met up and we were talking about where we should walk, and I brought up the new cornfield near my house and he said he was “Down for it.”
My friend and I went on toward the cornfield when some strange things started to occur. My friend started saying that the trees were looking at us. I tried comforting him saying he was just tired from school. He also said that he was hearing voices telling him to stay away. I tried to comfort him even more by telling him, “It was just the wind. You’re just imagining things.”
Secretly deep down I had a weird feeling that he was telling me the truth. Once we arrived there was a chill breeze that wasn’t there before. My friend and I had just started walking through the cornfield and everything was normal. Then half way through I started to hear voices too.
“Turn back now.”
“Leave while you still have the chance.”
I originally didn’t say anything to my friend. I eventually gathered the courage to tell him that I heard the voices too. He was speechless. Then we heard a boom and the corn started closing in on us. We ran as fast as we could not knowing if we would make it out. Then we saw the exit as we sprinted for freedom. We could hear each other’s heartbeats as the corn closed behind us. Then we made it to freedom.
My friend and I pledged to never let anyone fall victim again so the next day we made a sign that said “Do not walk here!”
