It was a dark and stormy night, in the great city of Portland. Arthur Cassidy was dripping with sweat and was panting trying to catch his breath. It was game seven of the NBA Finals and he already had 32 points and it was the 4th quarter. Brenden Lindstrom had 27 points. The Portland Blazers were down seven points in the 4th quarter against the Cleveland Cavaliers and their star player Brenden Lindstrom. They are matched up against each other and are both All-NBA point guards. Arthur is the underdog matchup with his teammates Jace Sanden, Colton Woods, Parker Trask and Joseph Gradler making up the starting five against Brenden, Grady Mosher, Kamden Moon, Zach Turben and Aaron Davis.
Heading into the 4th quarter the score was 97-90. The Cavaliers were up, but this game was far from over. Portland would start with the ball in the 4th quarter and on the first play he would make a pull up 3. The game kept going back and forth through the 4th quarter, but with two minutes left the Cavs would take a timeout as the Blazers were starting to make a bit of a run. Arthur Cassidy and the Trailblazers were still trailing to Brenden Linstom’s Cavaliers by five as the score was 119-114.
Coming out of the timeout Aaron Davis would pass it in to Brenden and he would go straight to the hoop and get an easy 2 points lower the deficit to 7. Then Arthur would take up the ball and pass it into the corner for Jace, but the shot went in and out. Then Colton Woods came flying in and grabbed the rebound and kicked it back out to Cassidy and he would fire back with a wide open three pointer to make it a 4 point game.
Now with the game down to a minute and fifteen seconds left, it was only a 4 point game. The next plays would end up deciding who will win the NBA finals. The ball was inbounded to Brenden and he confidently ran past half court. While the shot clock wound down to 10 seconds, Brenden blew by Arthur and rose up to do a windmill dunk over Parker Trask. He slammed the ball through the rim as the fans stood up in awe cheering violently. That is when Brenden heard a pop in his knee as he landed awkwardly after the thunderous dunk.
Injured, he fell to the ground in agony and an injury timeout had to be called for the star player. They picked him up and led him back into the locker room in a wheelchair as he could not walk on his own. Stunned fans watched in despair as they ended the timeout and had to continue with the clock being under a minute in a six-point game. Arthur knew what he had to do. He received the ball from an inbound and dashed up the court to deliver a quick punch with a 3 pointer. Fans roared as the shot went in. Then knowing he had to step up with Brenden injured, Grady Mosher posted up in the paint against Jace Sanden. He faked and went for the layup, but it didn’t work on Jace, and he smashed the ball off the backboard and Parker jumped up for the rebound. The clock now read 22 seconds left, the shot clock was off, and Arthur called a timeout.
His coach Patrick Trotter came up with a plan, he called the play “Curry.” Joe would start with the ball as point guard and would rotate to the wing pushing Arthur to run under the hoop and curl back up to the opposite wing while receiving two screens from Jace and Parker. He would then get an open three to win the game.
Then after the timeout ended there was tension in the air. Arthur dripped with sweat, after all he has done to get here it came down to him to make the last shot. The whistle blew, fans were waiting in a thick layer of anxiety. After draining a small amount of clock the play went into action. Arthur dashed under the basket with screens coming in perfectly, but Kamden was a good defender and evaded them. Arthur went to get the ball from Joe’s pass but Kamden deflected the ball! With only 5 seconds left, Arthur ran to grab the ball and shot it from the logo. The room was silent as the ball soared through the air. Only when it swished perfectly through the net did fans begin to jump and players rushed onto the court to celebrate with Arthur Cassidy as the Portland Trailblazers won the NBA finals!
