Poor Man’s Poison is an American band from Hanford, California, started in 2009. Their genre is American folk or alternative country. This list will explore my personal top 10 songs by them and my reasoning for those songs.
10. “Hell’s Comin’ With Me”
“Hell’s Comin’ With Me” starts off my list because it was the first song by Poor Man’s Poison I heard. It is what introduced me to the band that lead me to hear all of the amazing songs ahead on the list. For that it holds a special place.
9. “Give and Take”
“Give and Take” is the second song in a trilogy of songs made by Poor Man’s Poison. It is a statement to be wary of your surroundings because you don’t know who is out to get you.
8. “Feed the Machine”
“Feed the Machine” is the first of the trilogy of songs mentioned in the previous entry. In the song it talks about standing up to the oppressive allegiance in the apocalypse, a metaphor for the government not listening to the people.
7. “Good People”
“Good People” is a commentary about humanity’s increasing greediness and how no matter how far and wide you go, it is hard to find people who care about anyone other than themselves and possessions.
6. “Devil’s Price”
“Devil’s Price” is a guide of sorts. It speaks of how the devil tempts, promising release, only to take away your peace of mind, spinning you down a rabbit hole of anxiety. Telling you to leave his offer and save yourself, finishing by thanking you for listening.
5. “Crown Vic Headlights”
“Crown Vic Headlights” put a light on not feeling good enough and wanting to save yourself and everyone else but being too ashamed to help anyone.
4. “Providence”
“Providence” is a song that highlights the problems and corruption of government, and how no matter who is in charge, the poor always suffer.
3. “Stronger than the Whiskey”
“Stronger than the Whiskey” got into the top three because it is a song that actually addresses real alcohol addiction. The pain it can place on not only the family and friends, but the individual themselves. Instead of idealizing heavy drinking like a lot of songs do, it shows everyone begging him to stop drinking, even begging himself, but not being able to stop until it drowns him.
2. “Let’s Go!”
“Let’s Go!” made it’s way to the second place because it is a very enthusiastic song that helps motivate me to work my best and is the third in the previously mentioned trilogy.
1. “This is the End”
Fittingly enough, to end this list is “This is the End.” I chose this song as my number one because it is a heart felt song about always trying, putting forth the best, but always failing. And finally being able to give it a break and know when it is enough.
