Lee Swartzfager has been a part of Corry School District for over twenty years, helping our community in so many ways. On Thursday, October 3, our community came together to help support the Swartzfager family while Lee battles stomach cancer, raising over $7,600. For our Charity Night, Corry hosted Mercyhurst Prep, which was the second most important part of the night.
Corry got an early lead on the Lakers as Senior Libero Makenna Moore served four consecutive aces. Soon after Seniors Aubrey Chase and Sydney Woods followed with one ace each. Makenna Moore had an ace bringing the score up to 16-7. A save by Moore started an intense rally, ending by a Mercyhurst error that brought Corry up to a 10 point lead. Prep called their first time out when they were trailing behind the Beavers, 7-18. The time out was caused by a kill with a setter dump by sophomore Haley Mumau, and a senior Payton McCray kill by a set from sophomore Grace Allen. A kill by Senior Halle Albers brought the score up to 22-10. A kill by senior Allison Sawyer brought Corry to set point. A service error by Hurst allowed Corry to win the first set, 25-16.
Sydney Woods started as Libero in the second set. Mercyhurst gains the first point off of an error made by Corry. An error by Mercyhurst brings the score to 2-2, keeping the score very close throughout the beginning of the second set. Junior Sydney Mineo came into the service line, Mineo’s serve beginning a rally that was ended by a miscommunication by Mercyhurst giving Corry a six point lead. Kills by senior middle-hitter Sadye Dyne, senior outside hitter Halle Albers, a double block by sophomore duo Regan Kemp and Rylee Nickerson, and a Sydney Woods ace brought Corry to a nine-point lead, making the score 14-5. Allen had two kills sandwiched by a block by Dyne ending the second set, with a final score of 25-12.
The third set junior Brynley Watrous came in as Libero. A hit by senior Sadye Dyne gave Corry the first point. Multiple back-to-back errors brought Corry up to a five-point lead, the score being 5-0. The first rally of the set ended from a ball hit out, giving Corry six points. A tip from Allen gave the Beavers a seven-point lead, then a service error gave the Lakers their first point of the set. Hurst errors gave Corry a ten-point lead, bringing the Beavers to 15-5. Errors made by the Beavers brought the Lakers up to 19-16, making the score the closest it has been in the last two sets. A Laker error brought Corry to 20. A Corry error gives Mercyhurst one point makingĀ the score 20-17. A Sawyer tip makes it 21-18. Grace Allen ends an intense rally, the Beavers need just two more points to end the night. A kill by Grace Allen brought Corry to set point, and a Brynley Watrous ace ended the night for the Corry Beavers.
