Corry volleyball takes the win for senior night

The Beavers host the Bobcats

On Thursday, September 27, the Corry Lady Beavers welcomed the Seneca Bobcats as their opponents for senior night.

Corry had a slow start in the first set, so Seneca was able to take the lead early on. The first set was close throughout, both teams taking turns in the lead. A kill from senior Aubrey Chase allowed Corry to be in the lead by three points, as the score was 5-8.

The Bobcats did not let the Beavers get a very big lead in this first set, keeping it close by five or less points. A block by seniors Allison Sawyer and Sadye Dyne stopped Seneca from catching up, keeping the score at 10-12. A kill from sophomore Grace Allen finally got the Beavers up by five, bringing the score to 15-10 nearing the end of the first set. Seneca took their first time out as the Beavers were taking the lead with a score of 22-16. The Beavers were up by four, at 23-19 when senior Sadye Dyne had a block that brought the Beavers up to set point. The Seneca Bobcats had an error, which gave Corry the winning point for the first set.

The second set started with a kill from Sawyer giving us a four-point lead. Corry was up by nine because of consecutive errors from Seneca. Sawyer had another kill, bringing the score up to 11-1 when the Bobcats call their first time out for the second set. A kill from Dyne followed by an ace from Mineo, and then a kill from Carr brought the Beavers up to 15-3. A Seneca error caused the second time out of the set, McCray serving an ace directly after the time out, making the score 22-6. Sophomore Reagan Kemp entered the game with an ace bringing the Beavers to set point. The game winning point was made by a block by sophomore’s Grace Allen and Rylee Nickerson, the final score being 25-7.

The Bobcats scored the firstĀ  point of the third set, but soon after Sadye Dyne had a hit, giving the Beavers their first point of the set. The beginning was close, when Allen had a powerful kill bringing the score to 3-3. Corry was able to get the lead when Senior Sydney Woods had an ace, followed by Senior Aubrey Chase bringing the score up to 8-4. Emmalee Carr soon followed with a kill bringing the Beavers up into the double digits.

The score was 10-6 when the senior duo Dyne and Sawyer had two back to back blocks to keep the rally going. The rally finally ended when Sadye Dyne had a powerful kill, bringing the score to 12-6, Seneca then called the first time out of the set. Seneca called their next time out when the score was 21-9, followed by a kill from senior Makenna Moore, bringing the score to 22-9. Two Bobcat errors brought the Beavers up to 24-9. That is when sophomore Haley Mumau entered the game, serving a game winning ace, ending the night with a senior night win for the Lady Beavers.

Sophomore Grace Allen ended the night with six kills, one dig and one block. Senior Allison Sawyer had five kills, four digs, two aces, and one block. Senior Aubrey Chase had five kills, one dig and two aces. Senior Sadye Dyne ended the night with five kills and two blocks. Senior Halle Albers had four kills, six digs, two aces and one block. Senior Emmalee Carr accomplished three kills and one dig. Senior setter Payton McCray had one kill, nineteen assists, three digs, and two aces. Senior Sydney Woods had one kill, seven digs, and two aces. Senior Makenna Moore had one kill playing as an outside hitter, when she is typically the labero, six digs and two aces. Sophomore setter Haley Mumau had twelve assists, two digs, and one game winning ace. Junior Bailee McCray had four digs on the night. Junior Brynley Watrous had three digs. Sophomore Rylee Nickerson had one dig and one block. Junior Sydney Mineo had one dig and one ace. Sophomore Reagan Kemp had one ace during the second set.

This year the volleyball team has nine seniors, after only having one in 2022 and no seniors last season. This year the special nine are: Halle Albers, Makenna Moore, Allison Sawyer, Sydney Woods, Sadye Dyne, Emmalee Carr, Kendyll Chamberlin, Payton McCray and Aubrey Chase. Each of these nine seniors have been a huge part of Corry Volleyball over the last four years. This group of girls has led Corry all the way to the first round of state playoffs, and are currently standing at #1 AA with a record of 6-1 overall and 4-0 in region four.
