When you first decide to start reading the Bible, it can be really difficult to know where to start, especially since there are 66 different books to choose from. I decided to put together a list of the top 10 Books of the Bible that I would recommend starting with. Keep in mind that there is no right or wrong answer to which book you should start with. I hope this helps!
10- James– I wouldn’t start with the book of James, but it is a good book to read towards the beginning of your Bible reading journey. James is one of the shortest books of the Bible and it talks about Christian living.
9- Ephesians–
Ephesians is another book that is good to read towards the beginning, but again I probably wouldn’t read it first because other books are more important and beneficial, especially to new readers. The book of Ephesians also talks about Christian living and is still really beneficial to read.
8- Romans–
The book of Romans also addresses Christian living, and it also talks a lot about sin. Again, this book is beneficial to read in the beginning because of this, however some of it is kind of confusing, but confusion comes with every book of the Bible.
7- Exodus–
Exodus is the second book of the Bible and continues the story from Genesis. It is mainly about Moses and Israelites. The book of Exodus is really important because it tells about the Ten Commandments. I think it is a good book to read for beginners, but definitely not the best one to start with.
6- Genesis–
The book of Genesis is the very first book of the Bible. It explains creation, sin, and Noah’s ark. This book is really important to read towards the beginning because it helps explain a lot about who God is and why different things happened the way they did. Genesis is really helpful for learning more about sin and the results of it, and the creation of the world and everything in it. Genesis also includes a lot of genealogies, which seem very long and boring and honestly are kind of discouraging, especially for new readers, because they seem to drag on for a long time. However, it doesn’t do any harm to skip over the genealogies and read the rest of the stories.
5- Proverbs–
The book of proverbs teaches a lot of Christian principles and how we should strive to act. I think it is a really good
book for new readers because of this and it is really helpful for new Christians, or just people who are new to reading the Bible.
4-John–
The book of John is the last of the four gospels. It includes Jesus’ death and resurrection. I would recommend reading through all the gospels first because it is really important, especially for new readers. They teach readers a lot about Jesus and his teachings. Although the book of John does not include Jesus’ birth or the last supper, it is still a really important and great book to read.
3-Luke–
The book of Luke is the longest of the four gospels. It includes the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus. This book also includes Jesus’ childhood, which the other gospels do not include. The book of Luke includes a lot about Jesus’ ministry and is a great book to read when you are just starting out.
2-Mark–
The book of Mark is a more fast-paced telling of Jesus’ teachings than the other gospels. It is still helpful for learning more about Jesus and it begins with Jesus’ baptism which I think is really cool to read about. This is the shortest of the gospels, so it is really helpful for beginners to ease into reading the Bible.
1- Matthew–
The book of Matthew is the first book of the New Testament, and the first of the four gospels. I would recommend starting with Matthew because it is an account of Jesus’ life and death, as well as his resurrection and goes further in depth in some of Jesus’ teachings than the other gospels do. The book of Matthew also includes Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which I think is really good for people who are new to the Bible to read in the beginning.
