We all know that since the very first time a video game came out, it was questioned as to if they would have a negative effect on kids. In 2020, when Covid-19 was at its highest and kids were online, video games became some kids’ comfort alone time. Now that time has passed the question is: Do video games inflict violence?
I personally do not play video games all that often and when I do, you can tell I am a wreck, but I have first hand witnessed someone very close to me change over the course of the past four years. When they first started playing video games, it was quiet and fun, but as time passed I started to notice more aggression when it came to playing video games. Now there is screaming, banging, and sore language being used. When they do not get their six hours of playing time they get agitated and more upset with the people around them. This could be the affects of also being a teenager, but you can’t change the fact that there is a broken keyboard on the floor in their bedroom.
In 2020 video games were some kids form of a social life and this may have also effected kids as they may have been at an all-time low. Even without video games being added there could have been aggression.
I think that video games do make kids experience some violence but to an extent. I do not think that kids would rob a store because they can do it on GTA. It depends on how the kid was raised, also. If the parents make sure to apply rules and let a kid know what’s wrong and right, it can affect how the kid will react after playing video games, but say parents don’t set rules, the kid may experience what everyone thinks will happen when kids play violent games. That brings me to my next point. Kids can play any game and get aggravated. It’s all competitive. We see football players in outrage and don’t think that football is bad because it makes people violent.
I do think that if a kid is playing video games it should be monitored and with a time limit, but that’s not to say that video games don’t enhance aggression. I just don’t think it makes kids very violent.
