March is Women’s History month, where women are celebrated every day for 31 days straight. The theme for 2024 is “Inspire Inclusion.”
March officially became known as “Women’s History Month” in 1987, still standing 37 years later. Women’s History Month is a chance to recognize women. Women are usually not appreciated as much as they should be and are often taken for granted. Many women led accomplishments that have made a big impact in history that have not gotten enough attention.
During the month of March there are a variety of ways that people celebrate Women’s History Month. For example, there are television specials, political speeches, learning activities in schools, and recently there has also been a spark in social media posts that honor the special women in a certain someone’s life.
At first there was Women’s History Day in 1910. Then by the 1970s women had it so there was a Women’s History Week in attempts to amplify women’s history in schools. In 1986, 14 states recognized March as Women’s History Month. Within the following year the month was officially established as an annual federally recognized observance by the U.S. Congress. Each United States President since 1995 has issued a yearly proclamation honoring the role of American women in history.
History faced a turning point when Women’s History Month was established. It was an important accomplishment for every woman in the United States.
