The Corry Girls Varsity Soccer team has shown immense improvement this past season. Mandatory practices started mid August, the first game being August 26 against Iroquois. Playing 16 regular season games with the record of 10-5-1 (10 wins, 5 loses and 1 tie), counting the playoff games their season record is 11-6-1.
Playing their first play-off game on October 21 against Connecticut at Franklin High School. The game ended in a 2-1 win for the Beavers. The starting players for the play-off games were Lexi Scholar, Ava Whitley and Emily Greer on offense, Ellie Curtis, Marleigh Martin and Morgan Martin playing midfield. Delaney Nickerson, Mallory Dahlgren, Ava Weatherbee, and Tenley Janes were on defense, as well as the goalie Baylee Smith.
When asked how Ellie Curtis felt about the season she states “This season was great. We really learned how to play like a team this year and how to trust each other on the field. The environment of the team is great, we are all best friends and have a great time together on and off the field, we are a family. We always lift each other up when someone is down and nobody is ever left out.”
“This year there was never a game that we walked into where we thought we didn’t have a chance at winning, which is different from other years,” Curtis continued. “Every team we played we were either better than or equal too and we knew that if we worked together and pushed ourselves, we could come out on top. The support that we got throughout the season, especially towards the end was great. The boys team followed us to both playoff games to cheer us on. Our parents decorated our lockers and came to our games and made us feel special. Our coaches dedicated all their time to us during the season and always were there to remind us that we know what we’re doing and we play great.”
I then asked Curtis what she thinks could have been done to have a different outcome, she said, “This season was truly great, there’s not much more we could have done to play better, however, hopefully next year we get some new girls to come out and play with us because it was getting hard towards the end of the season when we were already short on numbers and then girls on the team were getting injured.”
I would like to take a moment to thank Ellie for answering my questions and wish the Girls Soccer Team the best of luck with their season next Fall.
