Monday October 16 marked a memorable day for the high school cross country teams. Both the boys and girls won the region title against their final region opponent, Eisenhower. The boys have never won a region title in Corry history, so this year’s group of boys not only get a year on the banner, but get the title of “banner boys.” The girls team won their region title for the fourth straight year in a row, making Corry Cross Country history.
The race Tuesday took place at the Legion in Corry, with runners competing mostly on the biking/running path. Spectators could stand along the bike path or up in the parking area to watch the runners at multiple points. Although the weather was dreary, the mood was light when these athletes heard of their accomplishment. Cupcakes were quick to follow as athletes celebrated their wins. The girls breezed through Eisenhower, winning 19-37, and the boys prevailed 20-43; allowing them to finish their season both 6-0.
Head coach Ryan Kelly expressed his pride in both teams by saying, “Winning region titles for both the boys and girls team during the same year is a huge accomplishment. I am really proud of how consistently well our athletes have competed during the season. I am ecstatic for the boys team, because they will finally have a banner in the gym.”
“The girls winning four straight years is a stunning accomplishment, and they have definitely solidified themselves as one of the premier distance programs in the area,” Kelly said. “Our seniors (Haeleigh Bayle, Tavon Kornikoski, Fabian Fourspring, Camryn Fox) have accomplished so much over the years and our program will continue to thrive in the future as a result of their commitment and leadership.”
The athletes will round out their season with a meet October 20, and the District meet on October 28 where they hope to qualify for states (November 4) in Hershey.
