Survey: Community service requirements for graduation

Tony Kerr, Reporter

Currently as of the 2022-2023 school year, seniors are required to have five hours of community service in order to graduate. But is this a good requirement? According to:

Mr. Simmonsen: I’m neutral but glad that I did not have to do it.

MacKenzie Gordon: No we should not have to do it.

Mrs. Beebe: We should definitely have it as long as they are actually doing something for the five hours.

Mr. Lesher: Good idea it has many options and has been easy for most kids to take care of.

Mr. Brady: I think they should do it anyway, but not as a requirement.

Mrs. Bourgoine: I think it is good at five hours, my kids had to do twelve to graduate.

Aubrey Chase: Yes it is a good idea.

Halle Albers: Yes they should have more hours required.

Katerina Kaiser: Yes, I think it is a good idea.

Mr. Benzel: Yes, good idea, but ten hours would be better.

Mr. Luther: Yes I think it is good at five hours.

Mr. Kerr: I believe it is good as is.

Mr. Goodwill: I think it is good right where it is.

Mrs. Brady: I think it is a good thing, colleges will look at it and consider it when making application decisions. Five hours is a good amount. I believe it is good to learn to communicate with other people, and hopefully it causes a habit of being helpful.

Mr. Potocki: I think it is good to give back and five hours is not a lot.

Mr. Carney: Five hours is a good number. It used to be twenty.

Mr. Brewer: Students get to learn how to give back and be humble.

Mr. Woods: I think it is good as it is.

Mr. Carey: I think it is a great idea as long as the seniors are held accountable.

Mr. Zarger: It seems to be what we do.

Mr. Kelly: I think it is good and they could do more if it was more structured.

Mr. Brumagin: I don’t really care.

Mr. McCray: They should do it.

Mr. Fourspring: They should save it for when they get in trouble with the law.

Mr. Krasa: I think it is a great idea definitely do it. More would be better even a weeks worth at around 40 hours.

I agree with Mr. Brady and Mr. Fourspring. I believe that it should be encouraged but not as a requirement. And it can and does act as a decent rehabilitation to getting in trouble with the law in some cases. However, if the community service hours were a little more structured like Mr. Kelly suggested, we might be able to get more done as Mr. Benzel and Mr. Krasa thought.
