Margot Robbie as Barbie in “Barbie”

Recently, a trailer has been released for the long-anticipated “Barbie” film directed by Greta Gerwig. The film boasts an all-star cast including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, and more.

The trailer gives viewers an in-depth look at Gerwig’s Barbie universe, which features several different iterations of both Barbie and Ken living in an idyllic dreamworld. Looking in the background of this trailer reveals many hidden easter eggs and special details.

Barbie Land features many “Barbieified” replicas of real-world things, like a Barbie-themed Statue of Liberty and an LAX inspired “BAX” airport. Another interesting detail is that all the props featured in the trailer (and presumably the whole movie) are made of plastic, including the plastic waves on the Barbie Land beach.

More details in the trailer imply that the film is in fact set in a fictional Barbie paradise, like the inclusion of the corporate workers as well as the Warner Bros. logos sprinkled throughout Barbie Land. It seems like the film will follow Margot Robbie’s Barbie journeying to the “real world.” Another detail that supports this is the shot that shows “The Wizard of Oz” being shown at the Barbie theater. While Dorothy leaves her boring Kansas life for a colorful paradise, it seems Robbie’s Barbie might do the exact opposite. The trailer also features a pink gingham dress and a pink version of the “yellow brick road,” potentially more allusions to the iconic film.

Barbie is not Barbie without her iconic fashion, and it seems the film will showcase new looks and pay homage to the old. Barbie is shown wearing her first ever outfit (a striped bathing suit and sunglasses), a revamp of the ’90s “Hot Skatin’ Barbie,” and a disco outfit inspired by “Golden Dream Barbie.” The iconic doll also sports pink western attire, fluffy pink heels, and a pink dress and matching beret.

Fans everywhere are excited to see what Gerwig does with “Barbie,” and from the trailer alone it seems like the film will honor the iconic doll while also taking her on new, modern paths.

“Barbie” hits theaters on July 21.
