The NBA first introduced the play-in tournament in 2020 when the NBA were played in the Orlando bubble due to the pandemic. The original play-in was between the 8 and 9 seeds for the final playoff spot in each respective conference.

In 2021 the play-in expanded to more of a tournament style format. The new format sets up with the 7 seed hosting the 8 seed with the winner earning the 7 seed in the playoffs. The loser of this game will play a home game against the winner of the 9 vs 10 game. The winner of the final game is awarded the final spot in the playoffs. Many people were against the play-in tournament when it was first introduced, but so far I believe it has been a major success.

This year has really embodied why the play-in tournament can be so successful. For starters, it serves as a magnificent appetizer for the playoffs. All the games so far this year have been extremely close and entertaining. In years past, the games have also been very competitive, so I would expect this trend to continue.

The Hawks kicked off the tourney by upsetting the 7 seeded Heat. Following that game, the Lakers clinched their spot in the playoffs with an overtime victory over the Timberwolves. The game included a plethora of big time plays including a clutch Dennis Schroder 3-pointer with only 1 second left. The 9/10 games were just as entertaining the following night.

The Bulls came back from 19 down to beat the Raptors thanks to a 39 point performance from Zach LaVine. The Thunder beat the Pelicans in a tight, back and forth game. Both 10 seeds winning is significant because it is the first time a 10 seed has won in this play-in tournament. I expect more good basketball tonight when the Bulls take on the Heat and the Thunder match up against the Timberwolves. As a fan, it is so awesome to see some extra postseason basketball while the teams that have already locked in their spots get some much-deserved rest.

Not only have this year’s play-in games been entertaining, but it showcases great players. Obviously, having proven stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the play-in is exciting. Love them or hate them, the Lakers are one of the most polarizing teams in the NBA and they draw loads of interest. In addition to that, we get to see young stars blossom right in front of us. The 10th seeded Thunder do not get a ton of national TV exposure and they would not have a chance to get in the playoffs without the play-in tournament. Thanks to the play-in we got to see the youngest team in NBA history ball out and fans get a glimpse of young stars such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey.

Overall, the play-in tournament has been a huge success for the fans, players, teams, and networks. Kudos to Adam Silver and the NBA for implementing this change.
