Final Four phenomenon

Final Four phenomenon

Ashton Mineo, Reporter

We are witnessing the craziest NCAA tournament in history. They call it March Madness for a reason, but this year there was definitely some extra madness.

For the first time, there will not be a 1, 2, or 3 seed in the Final Four. The highest remaining seed is 4 seed Connecticut. Connecticut has an impressive tournament pedigree as they have six Final Four appearances and four national titles. The other three teams: Florida Atlantic, San Diego State, and Miami, have never been to the Final Four until this season. If my math is correct, there is 75% chance we will witness a first time national champion

This year’s Final Four could not be more different than that of last year’s. Last year the Final Four consisted of four blue bloods. Kansas, Villanova, Duke, and North Carolina are all top of the line programs that are the face of college basketball. For obvious reasons, this Final Four made for must-see TV last season. I would argue that this year’s Final Four is also must-see TV. You have three new faces eager to win their first ever national title, alongside the power house UConn Huskies. It is exciting to see these mid-major programs go these runs and compete for a title.

An additional story line to follow is the postseason success of Conference USA. Conference USA is going for the first ever sweep of the three major postseason tournaments. Charlotte and North Texas have already won the CBI and NIT tournaments respectively. Not to mention North Texas played fellow C-USA member, UAB, in the NIT championship game. Florida Atlantic was the lone team representing C-USA in the 68 team NCAA tournament field, and they are one of the last four standing. Regardless of Florida Atlantic’s final outcome, this has been a dream season for them and C-USA. Also, if Florida Atlantic and Miami both advance to the national championship, it would be the first time two Florida teams would meet in the national title.

Overall, there are so many exciting story lines to follow for this weekend’s upcoming Final Four. New teams and player should make for a great weekend in Houston. All that is left do is park yourself on your couch and witness the epic conclusion to the best postseason tournament in sports.
